When one thinks of racism in the United States, invariably , though not only , the struggle of the African-American is singled out. The story starts off giving kind of a background of the main character in the story. Invisible Man turned into a huge success earning him a number of accolades, it being revered as a classic novel. Individuality has been subverted by expectations and the narrator is invisible to himself. His grandfather was very favored in the community for his allegiance.

Ellison is very descriptive throughout the entire story which allows the message to eloquently flow off the page and into the readers mind. So he thinks that his grandfather cursed him in some way, but his grandfather was talking about civil obedience. However, he is talked into fighting a group of kids before he is allowed to give his speech, which he goes on to perform after he loses in the fight. Therefore, the battling part of the story that was full of humiliation literary depicted the reality of racial and social conflict in the American society. He tries' to accomplish this goal by living to his grandfathers dying words. His brutal description of the scene that took place speaks to the horrors of pre civil rights for african-americans.

At this time, the Renaissance had spread to England. The Germans had overrun Belgium, the Netherlands and northern France in May 1940, using the Blitzkrieg 'Lightning War' technique that relied, among other things, on close coordination between ground troops and the air force. Ralph Ellison was a black writer who was born on March 1, 1914 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma only seven years after it had actually became a state. Some people saw this birthmark as a charm, while some were disgusted by it, like her husband. The harsh treatment that he is dealt in order to perform his task is quite symbolic.

The narrator and the other boys are invited to a luxurious hotel, but they are not participants in the wealth or social status associated with the hotel. The state is never identified, nor is the year, though the story was published in 1947. Both the novel and the film, which detail the lives of a fictional group of young students forced to kill each other in a program designed by the government until only one remains standing, evoked a torrent of objection from Japanese critics who felt that the plot would inspire schoolchildren to imitate the violent acts depicted by Takami Arai 367.
