Well, I was glad that Francis became his own person at last, and got to experience fulfillment for however short a time. I can relate my brother to Francis since my brother used to violent and now he isn't that violent, so basically there was a change with him as well. I'm happy to say I loved it! He published seven novels, six short story collections and two non-fiction works. They're the perfect pair: she's beautiful, and he's rich. What the title instead refers to instead are Macomber's final moments, in which he has finally 'come of age'.

I decided to go with his book of short stories, which begins with this story. The trio set out in their car and stop when they spot a lion. The question is whether this is, as Carlos Baker puts it in Hemingway: The Writer as Artist, rising toward a standard of manhood, or adopting a not very admirable set of values that depend on breaking the rules of hunting and lording it over his wife and other people. Though Wilson regards the Macombers as mere stereotypes, unworthy of his empathy, he displays clear empathy for the lion, suggesting that he finds the natural world more honorable than the human world. He gives the reader an outside perspective of the relationship between Francis and Margot, but it is whether or not his presumptions are accurate that deems him credible or not. Margot looks as if she is going to cry and decides to leave for her tent. At the same time that the lion is watching him approach, Macomber is walking toward the beast.
This is a story for people who want to learn about people; it may shatter some illusions of our greatness. Macomber agrees, and then apologizes again for the lion business. He is glad to have known and been educated about American women before meeting Margot, because the latter is very attractive. The lion roars one more time, more powerfully now, and Macomber says he hates the noise. Hemingway's ability is to draw the personality of the characters as human beings with their complex psychology and many contradictions avoinding the stereotypes. He raises his rifle toward the lion and fires, then fires again, and sees the lion head into the grass.
I ended up doubling back to write this a month or so after I read it because the story resonated with me more over time. The more Hemingway I read, the more easily I'm able to turn aside criticisms of his focus on masculinity as dampening the quality of his work. Such a presentation of a character requires a well informed author. Plot: Francis and Margot Macomber go on a safari guided by an attractive professional hunter, Robert Wilson. The only thing he hunts is his big game. He is still ashamed of having shown cowardice when confronting the lion, though. Macomber is giddy about his newfound fearlessness, which unsettles the stoic Wilson. Another essential conflict in this story is exemplified by the imperfect marriage of the Macombers, in which Margot seems perpetually dissatisfied and Francis unable to live up to her expectations of him.
