After its completion, the grounds would deserve to be dedicated and the air to be sweetened. It's elegantly written, well-argued, well-documented and full of insight and information. These recollections, recorded at various times after the speech was delivered and won fame, reflect two concerns on the part of those expressing them. The book also includes an excellent treatment of rhetoric and speech, tracing Lincoln's address back to Thucydides and Georgias and ending with the observation that it marked the beginning of modern American prose.
He could not count on any time for the concentration he required when weighing his words. I think he has over analyzed it. It has been long held that Lincoln scrawled these famous words in a hurry before the address was made. He was much pleased with the method of the graves, said it differed from the ordinary cemetery, and, after I had explained the reasons, said it was an advisable and benefiting arrangement. To read that Everett received communications from Meade, Halleck and others in order to prepare his address! The proponents of states' rights may have arguments, but they have lost their force, in courts as well as in the popular mind. Just wonder when that majority feeling changed.

I recommend this book for all those who are intrigued by the implications of the words Lincoln spoke on November 19, 1863. Lincoln's job was to find meaning in this terrible tragedy, and to justify the continuation of the slaughter that was the Civil War. He provides an intellectual profile of Lincoln. In particular, I enjoyed seeing the comparison between the Greeks speeches for fallen soldiers to the Gettysburg Address; they are almost identical. If I have dismissed this book way too soo Okay, no one throw rocks at me yet. That's not been a focus for me in previous Gettysburg trips.

For a man so determined to get there and so ready to invite others to attend , Lincoln seems—in familiar accounts—rather cavalier about preparing what he would say in Gettysburg. However, during the 1960s and 1970s, driven by his coverage of both and the , Wills became increasingly liberal. This is, I believe, quite wrong. The Governor of Pennsylvania authorized the purchase of a cemetery for the reburial of the Union dead. He reveals how deeply Macbeth's original 1606 audiences would have been affected by the notorious Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when a small cell of Jesuits came within a hairbreadth of successfully blowing up not only the King, but the Prince his heir, and all members of the court and Parliament. Most of them are forgettable, but the poem on pp. This is an unpopular message and one inevitably makes oneself unpopular in enunciating it--as witness Mencken--but it is vital nonetheless.
